Where Is the Sidama Coffee Region?

Sidama is one of Ethiopia's largest coffee-producing zones, located in the SNNPR at 1,550–2,200 metres altitude. It produces balanced specialty coffees scoring 84–90 SCA, with citrus and brown sugar notes in washed lots, and berry and chocolate in naturals. Bensa and Nensebo are the quality-leading sub-regions.

Sidama is one of Ethiopia's most prolific coffee-producing zones, spanning a vast area of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region. The region's diverse altitude range — from 1,550 to 2,200 metres — produces coffees with a wide spectrum of profiles, from chocolatey and full-bodied at lower elevations to bright and citric at the highest points.

The sub-regions of Bensa and Nensebo have emerged as the quality leaders within Sidama, producing micro-lots that rival the best of Yirgacheffe and Guji. Bensa in particular has gained recognition among competition buyers for its vibrant, complex washed lots. The region's cooperative infrastructure is well-developed, providing reliable supply chains and consistent quality.

Sidama's versatility is its greatest strength. The balanced, approachable profile works across multiple brewing methods and appeals to a broad consumer base, making Sidama lots ideal for roasters building an Ethiopian programme. Whether as a single-origin offering or as the Ethiopian component of a specialty blend, Sidama delivers consistent quality and reliable supply.

Processing infrastructure in Sidama has improved significantly in recent years, with investment in modern washing stations and raised-bed drying facilities. This has resulted in cleaner cups and more consistent scoring across lots. Natural-processed Sidama lots have also gained popularity, offering berry and chocolate profiles with full body that perform well as espresso.
